Hoping to raise awareness and supporters for AFFRM’s distribution label, Array, Ava DuVernay enlisted black filmmakers to share insights and advice via Twitter on May 27, 2015.
Moderated by DuVernay, more than 40 black filmmakers including John Singleton, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Ryan Coogler, Dawn Porter , Rick Famuyiwa , and Justin Simien participated for over 12 dropping gems of knowledge and inspiration.
Using the hashtag #ARRAY, the “Rebel-a-Thon” began in the morning with Debbie Allen, among others, and continued through the day with other top notch directors throughout the day.
DuVernay started AFFRM in 2011 aiming to empowering black, independent filmmakers with multi-platform distribution through Array.
Without any sponsors or grants, AFFRM was financed entirely by Ava DuVernay. Now it has a volunteer staff of 30. Fellow actors and filmmakers can donate and become members of the organization.
